Motion lines are lines added to a drawing of a person or object doing a movement. Mostly motion lines are often used in shonen and seinen manga since both type of mangas mostly have more movements(i.e fight scenes, sports, etc) than other type of mangas.
With motion lines it shows the readers that the drawing is doing a movement. To depict motion you could use only a single line to present motion in a zoomed object (e.g face). Another complex motion line is when action such as running where there are lines showing the path of the running motion. A more effective way to depict action movement is to create standard motion lines and multiple images of the moving person or object in different intervals, this will deliver a sense of movement being performed by the object or the person. You can also change the multiple images in different intervals into less defined images where it may give a feeling of fast motion. A mainsteam type of motion line is the moving background where you make streak lines on the background, with the background lines it gives the leader a sense of being part of the action of the object or person. Another motion line is where it is part of a moving object.
Motion lines should move in direction of the moving object or person. Motion lines are similar to a light source where it leaves a trail of light when moved. The light trails are similar to manga motion lines where it is only a part of a single object.
